Kelowna Women’s Shelter Committed to Helping Others
Royal LePage Kelowna has been a proud supporter of the Kelowna Women’s Shelter for 18 years. Since 1977, the shelter has been helping women and children have a safe place to escape from domestic abuse. Staffed by a group of tireless volunteers, the Kelowna Women’s Shelter is open 24/7 with programs, services and outreach options for women and children in need. The shelter provides its clients with food and shelter, counseling services, support, and education.
The organization is a non-profit center supporting individuals residing in the areas boundaried by Oyama to the North and Peachland to the South in Kelowna.
Royal LePage as a corporation established the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation, a charitable foundation that helps fund women’s shelters and violence prevention programs throughout all of Canada.
A Helping History
Through sponsoring the annual Christmas party for the shelter’s clients, Royal LePage – Kelowna has made sure that the individuals who frequent the shelter have an enjoyable holiday. At the parties, Santa Claus visits with the children, while attendees are treated to games, face painting, food and fun. Each year, Realtors and staff from Royal LePage bring gifts to the party to share in the holiday spirit. The Kelowna real estate agency also helps the shelter throughout the year, with events such as the Royal LePage Garage Sale in 2014; the sale involved all of the Royal LePage offices throughout Canada, with 100% of the proceeds going towards helping women and children who’ve been touched by violence. The sale included the “The Red Shoe Shuffle,” featuring brave male agents participating in a running race, with the event raising $25,000.00, with half going to the shelter.
Both collaboratively and individually, the real estate agents at Royal LePage uphold a solid commitment to helping victims of domestic abuse. Andrew Smith personally donates a portion of his commission from each house sold to the Kelowna Women’s Shelter. Royal LePage offices regularly hold bike rallies with entry fee proceeds funding their region’s women’s and children’s shelters. Royal LePage sponsored the pop-up banner Kelowna Women’s Shelter uses at awareness events throughout the region, and also paid for the shelter’s Castanet advertisement for three months. The sponsorship resulted in a 42% increase in website traffic.
Making a Difference
According to the United Nations Secretary-General’s Study on Violence against Children, an estimated 362,000 children are witness to or experience family violence, while Statistics Canada study finds that Canadian shelters may see 3,300 women sleeping in a shelter to escape abuse. Organizations such as Kelowna Women’s Shelter are absolutely committed to doing all they can to reduce the instances of family violence. Royal LePage invites everyone to contribute to its efforts – together we can make a difference!
Royal LePage Kelowna is proud to be associated with a shelter that gives all it can to women and children who have experienced domestic abuse.
As a Realtor Andrew Smith and his team donates a portion of each commission cheque to the Kelowna Women’s Shelter and participates in the year round fundraising.
