Hiking Around Kelowna and the Okanagan
Okanagan Lake is a draw for many residents of British Columbia due to its wide variety of activities, such as fishing, paddle boarding, and hiking. One area in particular, Okanagan Mountain Park in Upper Mission Kelowna is a wonderful area for outdoor enthusiasts to explore and enjoy. I recently found myself hiking in the park, and I recently saw all it offered firsthand. Covering over 10,000 hectacres, Okanagan Mountain Park is a perfect place to spend a day or two. The trails are open year round, and Camp Okanagan is one of the best sources of information on the park.
The park was burned significantly in the 2003 Okanagan fire, and much of the land was scorched. However, if you’ve not visited the park lately, you haven’t seen the lush land that awaits you. The grass and flowers have grown back, and the park is a rich paradise for any nature lover. If you’re a first time hiker, please be aware that Tourism Kelowna classifies the hiking as moderate to difficult, depending on the trails you choose. There are over 23 hiking options available in the Okanagan Mountain Park, and you’ll find distances range from 2 to 10 km. The area is only accessible by foot, bicycle or on horseback, so be prepared to park and hike.

Throughout your travels up and down the trails, you can take in the sights all around you. All you need is a little preparation and a beautiful day to enjoy hiking in Okanagan Mountain Park. There are creeks with water but park officials advise you pack several bottles of water so you can stay hydrated, especially in hotter temperatures. If you want to bring along man’s best friend, feel free, as long as he’s leashed. Many people love to walk the trails with their dogs, and I recently took my silky Yorkshire Terrier. He loved running around exploring everything and I guarantee your dog will too.
If you want to spend more than a day in Okanagan Mountain Park, don’t worry, because tent camping is available. The simple campsites are available for a nominal fee; you can view theon the park’s website. The sites are first come, first serve, so arrive early if you want the best spot!
